If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that I’m honest about the ups and downs and marriage. I’ve admitted that my own marriage has gone through its’ share of tough times. So I hope that no one construes this post to be unrealistically sappy or unobtainable. If anything, I hope that this post might give someone else in a currently unhappy marriage hope that can things can get better.

For today’s Seven Quick Takes link-up post (see This Ain’t the Lycem for other blogs in the link-up), and in the vein of Valentine’s Day coming up tomorrow, I’m going to publicly say thank you to my husband KP for 7 small things he has recently begun doing for me. I want to note that I did not ask for these things to happen, but that KP decided on his own to do. Husbands, take note – sometimes the smallest things can make the hugest difference to your wives and your marriage. These 7 things have made a huge difference to me and I am extremely grateful for my husband and want to publicly thank him so that others know how great of a catch he is too. 🙂

1. He makes me coffee every morning. I used to be more of a morning person. Now I am not. It’s such a small, small thing, but this small cup of coffee when I first wake up helps me get out of bed and started for the day.

2. He takes care of the kids in the morning while I wake myself up. He feeds C breakfast while I check my work email. He gets S a bottle when he wakes up super early in the morning. He often changes diapers and gets kids dressed for the day too.

3. He packs C’s lunch on preschool days. He just does it and I don’t even have to think about it. It’s very helpful.

4. He puts the kids to bed when he gets home from work. Well, S is often in bed before he gets home, but as soon as he walks in the door, he takes over C duty from me. Even if it’s just brushing teeth and saying prayers, I sometimes feel like at the end of the day I’m just barely holding on until he gets home. I know that by the time he gets home (usually not til 8pm-ish), he would rather just relax and zone out. But I appreciate this small break from bedtime duty so very much.

5. He does laundry. I’m not going to lie, he does the laundry more than I do. When he gets home in the evenings and kids are in bed and I’m trying to get work done on my computer – he’s often in front of the tv folding laundry. I don’t think I tell him thank you for this enough, so KP, I just want to let you know that I notice this, and I appreciate it.

6. He is patient with me. I do not keep our house very clean or picked up and I do not cook dinner very often right now. Our house is cluttered and not calm and soothing to come home to. But I keep the kids alive everyday. And bring in an income. And I handle other household tasks. And I’m often so mentally fried by the end of the day that I just want to listen to the silence of sleeping kids for as long as I can before I fall asleep and start again. He does not get annoyed that I haven’t put away the folded laundry, or picked up the kids’ toys strewn about the living room, haven’t done the dishes, or taken out the trash. This little bit of patience goes a long way for me and makes my days exponentially better.

7. He’s understanding and knows that this blog post will likely be in lieu of a Valentine’s Day card from me. I can only be sweet and sappy once a week and this is it. 🙂

Some people may look at this picture and just think, ‘oh aren’t they a cute couple who probably have marriage all figured out?” But I look at this picture and see two people with a long history of shared experiences. I see the frustration, and unhappiness, and hurt that have previously come between us – and I also see the love and bond we’ve created by navigating through those murky times together. Thank you KP for sticking with me through life and working it out with me. I love you very much.
