Date Night In Subscription Box Review – March 2017 Pamper Your Love

Two years ago, when I first stumbled onto the concept of at-home date night subscription boxes and put together a blog post listing the ones that I’d found – I had NO IDEA how the post would take off, how many new and exciting date night box companies were in development and how many date night boxes KP and I would be lucky enough to get to try out and review! It’s certainly been fun to see what each date night box service offers and feeling as though I’ve become the “expert” on all things date night boxes, lol.

A few months ago, I stumbled upon a new company, Date Night In, and KP and I finally got a chance to try out one of their boxes.
(Disclaimer: I was given a free box to review, but I was not paid to write this and – as with ALL my date night box reviews – all opinions are fully honest and completely my own!)

The March 2017 Date Night In box’s theme was Pamper Your Love, and included several items to create a relaxing spa date.  

Here’s what the box contained:
– Face mask kit: clay mix, 2 paper cups, mixing spoon, exfolation scrubber
– Sugar lip scrub
– Massage oil
– Lavender herbal tea & biscotti
– washcloth tied with dried lavender
– date night card: one side w/Strawberry Basil Chicken recipe; one side with instructions

First, I want to say that the very nicely designed box pictured above was also the box the date was mailed in. I don’t know if this would matter to anyone, but I suppose that if you wanted discreet packaging (or so the recipient is surprised) for some reason, it’s something to be aware of. 

Because I’m in my last month of pregnancy right now and kind of uncomfortable, lol, KP and I kind of had to make some adaptations with this spa-themed box. This is NOT Date Night In‘s fault, but I just want to give the preface in this review as to why KP and I didn’t go all out with our spa night. No champagne (boo), candles, and sexy half-robed pictures of us will be included here…though that might be a good thing! 

Unlike most of the other boxes we’ve done, this date night activity card didn’t give specific directions as to the order or events, nor did they tie in any relationship advice. Depending on what you’re looking for, this could be a good or bad thing for you.

Either way, we started with the sugar lip scrub. I’ve done other face and body scrubs before, but I don’t think I’ve ever done a lip scrub, so that was new for us both. It was kind of fun. Simple, just rub it on your lips and wash it off. But it did make our lips feel nice and soft after – so that’s good. 

Next, we checked out the massage oil. KP, who is not accustomed to spa-type items, was confused why there were plants in the oil, ha ha. In reading the list of ingredients, I paused at Ylang Ylang. I’m no oil expert, but I just recently put together a list of oils I might want to use in labor, and Ylang Ylang stood out – I thought it was an oil that could induce labor contractions, and even being in my 3rd trimester, it just wasn’t something that I wanted to test. Plus, KP and I have other oils that I knew we could use for now, so we skipped the massage oil.

However, of course, the next morning I realized that I was mistaken and that it’s CLARY SAGE that I should avoid until/unless I’m wanting to help encourage contractions…not Ylang Ylang! Ylang Ylang is actually supposed to be a nice and calming oil. Ha ha, so I could’ve totally used the massage oil safety while pregnant after all. Oh well. Now I just get to save it and use the oil in labor, I guess! (speaking of which, side note: I’ll soon be posting a complication of all my research on which oils to use in labor, because I mean, I just did all that work for myself – why not share the knowledge with anyone else who might want it, right?? Sharing is caring. 🙂 ) 

We did the mask next. I’ve done quite a few face masks in my day, so I took to mixing up the clay. I was a bit surprised to find some kind of other flowers or stems or something in the clay mix which made it reeeally felt like we were putting mud on our face. But whatever, I went with it. It was fun.

KP however, had never done a mask before. And was a bit unsure of the whole thing. 
“So I just rub this on my face?”
“On my forehead too? Won’t it get in my hair?”
“What’s this supposed to do to my skin? It feels weird.”
“I don’t know if I like this.”
“How long do I have to keep it on?”

I do wish that Date Night In would’ve included TWO of the wooden spoons though. Because KP was just putting the stuff on with this fingers (I naturally commandeered the only wooden spoon and left him to fend for himself. Sucker. 🙂 ). I had to help him apply the rest of the mask to his face. 

For the next 15 or minutes, we let the mask set, snacked on the biscotti, took some silly pictures, and just hung out. 

After we washed the masks off, KP said “you know, that wasn’t so bad; I could do a mask again – maybe I should see if they make ‘Man Masks’ or something”. So I looked it up, and yes, for anyone wondering, yes, yes, they do make them. See some Amazon links here:

Overall thoughts:
I realize that there’s a strong likelihood that KP and I have tried out more of these date night boxes than anyone else in the world, so I realize that my perspective is probably a bit skewed compared to your average couple doing one of these boxes for the first time.

With that said – I think that Date Night In has a lot of promise. As a new company, I think they are still figuring out their perfect niche. KP and I still enjoyed this spa box and had fun with it. However, I’m not sure if it felt like a “date night” as much as just some items included in a box that we could use together. Almost seemed more of a gift basket type of collection rather than a planned date. But the quality of the items included were nice.

Since this is the only box of Date Night In that we’ve tried so far though, I don’t want to judge too harshly based on this. And for some couples, they may actually prefer a date night box that doesn’t provide an itinerary/guideline. 

Side note: I re-read over the date night instruction card and noticed a typo in the card. Not a big deal, and I didn’t even notice the repeated sentence at first glace – but still, this is maybe worth noting if you’re planning to get this as a gift for someone or looking for a more professional, upscale feel?
